The Mission Celebrates 75 Incredible Years
The Mission celebrated its 75th anniversary with a birthday bash Monday afternoon at the Shepura Men’s Center chapel and dining hall downtown.
Guests heard live testimonies from three clients whose lives were forever changed through their experiences at the Mission’s three shelters. Executive director Tony Cooper said that seeing the successful impact in people’s lives is “the reason we do what we do.”

Cooper also presented a short historical video highlighting the significant moments and accomplishments of the Mission and its early leaders. That video is embedded below.
Don Lupo from the Birmingham mayor’s office addressed the crowd and representatives from Congressman Gary Palmer and Senator Richard Shelby’s offices were among the guests in attendance during the event.
The presentation was followed by a reception where guests were treated to food, cake, and refreshments. Though the invitation event took place at the Shepura Men’s Center, Royal Pines celebrated the occasion Monday morning while Jessie’s Place also threw a party later that evening.
On behalf of everyone at the Mission, we thank you for your prayers, donations, and support for the last 75 years. We honor Jimmie Hale, Jessie Hale Downs, Leo Shepura, and the countless others who sacrificed so much to make a redeemed man’s dream of helping the homeless in our community a reality. We asked for your continued support as we look forward to another 75 years of helping the poor and hurting in Jesus’ name. Thank You.
