Volunteer During the Holidays

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us during the holidays!

VOLUNTEERING DURING HOLIDAYS Main Image

What’s Different?

During the holidays, specifically around Thanksgiving and Christmas, we see an increased need; thankfully, we also see an increase in those wanting to help.

For Thanksgiving and Christmas, we have several special volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping that we’ll share here.

Holiday Placemat Project

During the holidays, we encourage children in schools, churches, home school groups, or just as individuals, to color in placemats.  Once completed, the decorated placemats are sent to us and we use them to display throughout our three shelters – that way, the men, women and children we serve know that someone is thinking of them.

Click here for a downloadable PDF of the placemat.  Please make as many copies as you’d like. Mail your placemats to:

Delivering Meals

On Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, we deliver hot meals to local seniors and shut-ins in our area. For each holiday, we’ll need about 70 to 80 volunteers willing to deliver these meals. We also ask for another 10 special volunteers, willing to come as back-up drivers.

Packaged meals are provided for you to deliver, but you need to provide your own transportation. We also provide you with a route and a detailed map with landmarks.

On average, volunteers deliver 4 to 6 meals, and many report being done within 2 hours. It’s an opportunity to serve others that suits many families looking to volunteer together.

Sign-up for Thanksgiving meal delivery will begin on November 1st and sign-up for Christmas Eve meal delivery will begin on December 1st.

If you’d like to sign up to help deliver meals, please email our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@jimmiehalemission.com or call us at (205) 323-5878.

Packaging Meals

As we deliver meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve (see above), we also need volunteers to come in early on those holidays to help package the meals and get them ready for delivery.

We’ll need about 15 to 20 people to arrive early at the downtown Mission (Shepura Men’s Center) to ladle food into containers, wrap securely in bags and ensure a correct count of meals for each route.

Sign-up for Thanksgiving meal packaging will begin on November 1st and sign-up for Christmas Eve meal packaging will begin on December 1st.

If you’d like to sign up to help package meals, please email our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@jimmiehalemission.com or call us at (205) 323-5878.

Serving Meals

We serve 3 meals a day, every day at each of our facilities, but many feel called to serve meals to those in need during this special time of year.

If you’d like to serve meals on Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve, please note the sign-up process will begin on November 2nd for Thanksgiving and December 1st for Christmas Eve.

If you’d like to sign up to help serve holiday meals, please email our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@jimmiehalemission.com or call us at (205) 323-5878.

As space is limited, this opportunity to serve usually fills up quickly. If that’s the case for you, we encourage you to consider one of our other holiday volunteer opportunities (see above) or volunteering with us any other time throughout the year.
