Discovery Clubs honors its Mentors at Appreciation Celebration
Discovery Clubs held its Mentor Appreciation Celebration Saturday morning in the beautiful fellowship hall at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Birmingham.
Discovery Clubs director Len Gavin and Jimmie Hale Mission executive director Tony Cooper were the key speakers at the event. Guests also heard essays read by the second through fifth grade contest winners.
The five and 10-year milestone awards were presented to dedicated mentors before the Mentor Appreciation and John Glasser Award winners were announced.
Millie Street was this year’s Mentor Appreciation Award recipient for her outstanding dedication the the program and children over six years. She is also responsible for initiating and spearheading the program at Pleasant Grove Elementary. Unfortunately, Millie passed away in early March, but her husband and daughters were in attendance to accept the award on her behalf.
The John Glasser Award is named after the man who started the Discovery Clubs program and is presented to an individual reflecting the attitude of Jesus in support of the program. This year’s recipient was Tony Cooper.
The Discovery Clubs staff and all of us at the Mission would like to extend another Thank You to the 400 plus mentors who lead more than 1,500 children in the Bible-rooted curriculum each week in our 30 partner Birmingham schools. You are truly making a difference in the lives of future generations and your continued commitment is greatly appreciated.
