Although the definition of Continuum of Care (CoC) can vary slightly from organization to organization, the central idea is fundamentally the same; to ensure ongoing care by guiding and tracking an individual through services and housing.

The Mission began outlining its plan of action specifically to assist graduating clients in making the transition back to a life of independence smoother by providing access to more external opportunities. In addition, establishing long-term communication with former clients will allow the staff to adapt to social and professional trends, broaden the network of partnering organizations and fine-tune program curriculum for increased efficiency.

After more than a year of development, the Mission’s CoC initiative was officially implemented in August of 2019 and incorporates five areas of concentration: job acquisition; housing; transportation; substance abuse care and, hopefully, regular involvement with faith organizations; and outcome.


The CoC program begins in the final stages of the Stewart Learning Center (SLC) curriculum at each of the three Mission facilities. Through the SLC clients at Jessie’s Place, Royal Pines and the men’s center are equipped with the skills they need to become self-sufficient citizens once again. Obtaining and maintaining employment is crucial to sustainable independence and completing the 16-wek Ready to Work curriculum provides invaluable training to residents. Implementing these concepts and practices through Christ-centered discipline helps transform students into reliable and trust-worthy employees.

The Learning Centers offer:

  • Basic skills training including math and writing
  • Personal finance classes that focus on budgeting and credit awareness
  • Literacy programs
  • GED preparation
  • Employment readiness skills such as job search assistance, resume preparation, interviewing, workshops and instruction on how to identify and overcome employment barriers

In an effort to bolster opportunities for clients, the CoC staff began hosting job fairs in coordination with the AIDT Training Center last fall in hopes of connecting graduates from its programs, and clients from countless sister organizations, with potential employers throughout the Birmingham area.

Mission personnel are also currently forging partnerships with various local non-profits and programs to provide direction and assistance in housing, transportation, and social support needs.
