Inspired by the growing need in our community, we will open the Emergency Plus Shelter to provide safe beds, meals, and care for Birmingham’s most vulnerable neighbors. With a goal of raising $5.5 million, we invite you to make this vision a reality.
Our Needs
The Greater Birmingham area is facing a growing crisis as more of our neighbors experience homelessness and face difficulties accessing safe shelter, basic care or supportive services. Through our work operating the city’s warming station, we have seen the depth of this need firsthand. Many individuals arrive cold, hungry, and without medical or mental health support. Reaching people in these vulnerable moments is often the only way to help them begin a path toward stability and long-term transformation.
The Emergency Plus Shelter will create a year-round facility that meets these immediate needs with dignity and compassion, while offering pathways to other area resources. The new building will offer 100 safe beds (not cots) including two family rooms, warm meals, showers, laundry facilities, case management, basic medical and mental healthcare, emergency dental care, and shelter for pets. By bridging essential services together under one roof, the new center will provide crisis care, build trust and help guests connect with programs across our area which can best assist them in taking their next steps toward a better life.
Located on the Birmingham Max Transit free Xpress route and across from our Downtown Men’s Center, the facility allows us to use existing resources and transition individuals smoothly into our residential programs. We are actively building momentum toward the $5.5 million needed to complete the project and plan to break ground once funding is secured.
