  •      In the world of thrift stores, there are two main types: for-profit stores and non-profit stores.  While each type brings something to the table, it can be very confusing to those wanting to donate their items to non-profit thrift stores, who will use those donated items to help others.

How can you be sure you’re donating to a non-profit thrift store?

    1. Do your research before donating:  Today, almost all reputable charities have a website you can check out. Once there, you can find if they collect donations, what type of donations they accept, and where to make that donation.

         2. Beware of Bins: While some non-profits do use donations bins to collect items like clothes and shoes, many for-profits are using this tactic as well.  If you want your items to be used to help others, read the wording on the bin carefully.  If you’re not familiar or not sure, call the charity you had in mind, or number listed on the bin, and ask before dropping off your items.  At the Jimmie Hale Mission’s Mission Possible Bargain Centers, we don’t use collection bins.  You can drop off your donations at any of our stores, call (205) 798-8365, or click to schedule a pickup!

         3. Ask if you get a receipt: Most (if not all) 501(c)3 charities as recognized by the IRS, can provide you with a tax-deductible receipt for your donations.  If they can’t offer you a receipt (and you want one!), that could be a sign to look for another organization to give your items to.
